Technical Parameters of Wood CNC Router

Cutting Speed
Typically measured in feet per minute (FPM) or meters per minute (MPM), cutting speed directly affects the efficiency of material removal and the quality of the surface finish.
The formula for calculating cutting speed (Cs) is:
Cs=π×d×n
ᴨ = constant 3.14
d = workpiece diameter
n = Engine Rotation Speed

Feed Rate
Feed rate is typically measured in inches per minute (IPM) or millimeters per minute (MM/min).
The formula for calculating the feed rate (F) is:
F= f × n
f is the tool shift per revolution (measured in mm/turn)
n is the spindle speed (measured in RPM)

Depth of Cut
Depth of cut refers to the thickness of the material that the cutting tool removes in one pass. It is measured in millimeters or inches and is a crucial parameter in determining the efficiency and quality of the machining process..
Soft Materials (e.g., Aluminum): Depth of cut can be higher, around 1-2 mm.
Hard Materials (e.g., Steel): Depth of cut should be lower, around 0.5-1 mm.

Spindle Speed (RPM)
Spindle speed refers to the rotational speed of the cutting tool or workpiece in revolutions per minute (RPM). It is a critical parameter for determining the cutting speed and ensuring efficient material removal.
The formula for calculating spindle speed (n) is:
Cs is the cutting speed (m/min)
d is the diameter of the workpiece (mm)
π\piπ is a constant (approximately 3.14)

SFM / Surface Feet per Minute
Surface Feet per Minute (SFM) is a measure of the cutting speed at the surface of the workpiece. It is a critical parameter in CNC machining as it directly affects the cutting efficiency and the quality of the finished surface.
The formula for calculating SFM is:
SFM = π×D×RPM/12
π is a constant (approximately 3.14)
D is the diameter of the workpiece (in inches)
RPMis the spindle speed (revolutions per minute)

Safety Tips to Observe When Using a Wood CNC Router

Rout in the Right Direction
You should always feed your workpiece against the bit's rotation. Feeding it towards the bit's rotation, also known as climb cutting is hazardous and may cause you to lose control of the router.

Keep-Off During Routing
Never attempt to make any adjustments to your workpiece while your CNC machine runs. Always turn it off whenever you need to adjust the work piece or change the bits. Keep your hands off the material until machining is complete, and if you must make adjustments, turn the machine off first. As mentioned earlier, you should be at least six inches away from it during the cutting process.

Never Leave the Room
Just because you're supposed to keep your hands off during the cutting process doesn't mean you leave the room. Although the process is computerized, a CNC machine may act up or break during the cutting process and when it does, you want to shut it down immediately to prevent further damage.

Never Force the Router
Another important CNC router safety tip is to avoid forcing the router through a cut because doing so will only damage it. If you detect any unusual vibration or noises, stop it immediately, and inspect it for bit damage.

Use the Appropriate Feeds and Speeds
Match your machine's capabilities to the "sweet spot" feeds and speeds. Use heavy cuts only when you bits and material allows for it. A good feeds and speeds calculator can help you do that.

CNC Machine Safety Tips After You're Done
● Once you're done using a CNC machine ensure you:
● Don't touch the bit immediately as it might be hot
● Clean and lubricate cutting tools
● Remove chips or debris from the CNC machine
● Check for, repair or replace damaged bits

FAQ

Q: Do I need to learn a programming language like G Code to operate a CNC router?

A: No you don't. The design software titles available today allow you to design your files, import pictures and drawings, manipulate them and the software will in turn generate the code that the machine will use to cut out you parts.

Q: What size machine is best for me?

A: What kind of work do you want to do now? How about 3 years from now? If you are in a small shop and you only want to make small parts, a small machine will likely do you just fine. But if you want to cut full sheets you will do well to look at a 4 x 8 foot or larger machine.

Q: What kind of work can I do on the CNC router?

A: Since the CNC router is predominately (but not exclusively) used for woodworking, you can use it to generate income by making signs, cabinet doors, musical instruments, toys, clocks, or any type of artistic pursuit for fun or profit.

Q: What materials will the CNC router cut?

A: A CNC router can be used to cut several different materials that include:
Wood
Aluminum
Composites
Metals
Plastic
Foam
Leather
Fabrics
Fiberglass
No matter which material you're using, the CNC router will offer the advantages of automation and exceptional productivity.

Q: Why not simply use a hand-held router instead of a CNC?

A: Here are the CNC's main advantages:
Faster moving: CNC routers move along three axes (X, Y, & Z) using a three-engine drive framework. Hand-held routers have a single cutting head, while CNCs can have multiple heads. And CNC routers can deliver intricate work in a fraction of the time. Need more reasons?
Accurate: Hand-held routers cannot produce the precision that their CNC counterparts do. Routing by hand using a template can't compete with the quality that comes from a stable and powerful CNC router.
Safer and more reliable: With a hand-held router, the operator is closer to the moving router bit, and there is always the possibility of human error. CNC routing can safely machine harder surfaces with the operator at a safer distance. Since the computer dictates all the moves, there are fewer errors, and repeatability is almost ensured.
Cost-Effective: Quality CNC routers have a higher upfront cost, but over the life of the machine tool, you will save much more in efficiency, quality, safety, and productivity. It isn't even close; the CNC router is much too versatile and provides too many benefits, so the hand-held router will always pale in comparison!

Q: What is CAD?

A: CAD stands for Computer Aided Drawing. Most projects performed with a CNC begin with a CAD drawing. Some software programs strictly offer CAD drawing, while others feature CAD and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) capabilities. CAD/CAM software packages allow for easy integration between the two types of software.

Q: What is CAM?

A: CAM or Computer Aided Manufacturing software runs simulations of your projects and create files which instructs your CNC machine how to move to create your desired part.
